Antique Varney Miners Candle Holder Sticking Tommy or Tommy Stick.
This is a candle holder that was used by miners to provide their working light. Before electric lamps and carbide lamps, candles were used to provide light in some mines for most of the 19th century. This candle holder has a spike that would have been driven into a framing timber or suitable crack and a hook that could be hung on a nail or the miner's hat also set upon an appropriate surface near the miner’s workspace. (Info from the Smithsonian).
This is an original piece from the 1800s, it has the makers mark (Varney) stamped in the top of the long spike. It is designed with a molded area for a candle stick to be placed and held securely with the tension of the spring metal, the spike is square wrought Iron formed into a very sharp spike.
This is a true collector piece and will add to any collection or the perfect addition to your fireplace mantel.
