Skeleton keys are also known as pass keys. Some believe that a skeleton key derived its name because of its’ shape and resemblance to a skull but the name actually comes from the fact that the key is stripped down like a skeleton to its most essential parts: a cylindrical shank with a single rectangular tooth. Skeleton keys were widely used in most houses until after WWII when the pin tumbler lock – the Yale lock – took over.
