We have for sale a Set of Three Vintage Brass Branding Irons.
Wonderful set of Three Brass Horn Branding Irons. 3-4-5 cattle brand numbers made by the O. M. Franklin blackleg Serum Company. The brands have brass numbers and metal handles back in the day ranchers us to brand the horns on the cattle being brought into auction. This set are the numbers 3, 4 & 5 and are all marked on the handle O. M. Franklin blackleg Serum Co.
Found in Western South Dakota

Circa; 1927-1937
Markings; O. M. FRANKLIN blackleg Serum Co.
Dimensions; 19.25” long, numbers are ¾” wide x 1” tall
Condition; very good for age with scuff and scratches from use, normal rust on handle.

History;
Dr. Oliver Morris (O. M.) Franklin Serum Co. In 1916 O. M. Franklin, a veterinarian, developed the first successful blackleg vaccine in the United States in Wichita, Kansas. Blackleg had become a deadly cattle disease in the Midwest and the West. Franklin and three other veterinarians had been investigating the disease for four years at the Kansas Experiment Station at Manhattan. In 1916 they moved to Wichita, Kansas, where they built a small two-room plant to manufacture the drug. In 1927 the name was changed From a Wichita Kansas name to the O. M. Franklin Blackleg Serum Company, but in 1937 they Dropped Blackleg Serum Co. making these irons made between 1927-1937
