Thank you for viewing our Store,
We have for sale an Antique 1800s Apothecary Cork Press, Cast Iron
This Victorian period Cork Press is made of Cast Iron and has a beautiful scroll design which was very popular in this era.
These were used by Pharmacists and Druggists to compress corks for medical bottles, it has three different diameters 1/4, 3/8, 1/2” press points. Measures 10” long and can be screwed down to a work surface.
Circa;1880
Marked; none
Measures; 9 ¾” long, 3” tall
Condition is very good for its age, the original black paint is still present but worn, nice dark patina. Could use a deep cleaning
History:
The bottle cap wasn’t invented until the 1892 by the Crown Cork Co. of Baltimore, but not highly used until into the 1900s. Before the cap was introduced most all bottles had corks including Medicines, Perfumes & Alcohol.
*** Caution there are reproductions of these, they are fairly easy to tell the difference, most reproductions don’t have the screw holes in the feet and if you look at the bottom they are flat and don’t have the support beam running the length of the press.

I am so impressed with River Rat Antiques - James contacted me after purchase, shipped my items (2 and both are awesome!) immediately, and included information about them in the shipment. Everything was packaged well for shipment and arrived so quickly. River Rat will be my first stop on Etsy always!
