19th Century Powder Flask by James Dixon & Sons, Civil War Era
Exquisite find, this Civil War Era black powder flask made by James Dixon & Sons of Sheffield, England.
Made of Copper and Brass, the flask has screw-off brass Graduated Charger with four drams settings 2¼, 2½, 2¾, 3 and marked (James Dixon & Sons Sheffield). The copper case is smooth with no design.
Overall condition is very good, case has a couple dings (shown in pictures), the charger thumb spring is strong and works easily, the graduated setting for the drams moves freely.
Flask is as found in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
History,
James Dixon & Sons founded 1806 in Sheffield, England. They were a world leader in manufacturing shooting accessories through nineteenth century and exported powder flasks in large quantities to America, They were known for their outstanding quality.
Drams calibration,
2 to 2-1/2 drams .58 caliber
2-1/2 drams - 20 gauge
2-3/4 drams - 16 gauge
3 - drams - .69 caliber
Circa, 1860
Marked, James Dixon & Sons Sheffield
Measures, 8¼” long, 3¼” width on case.
Condition, very nice condition.
