1930s Stoneware Growler, Batey Ginger Beer
Wonderful one-gallon Stoneware Growler for Batey Ginger Beer.
The jug was made by Pearson & Company, Wettington Moore Potteries of Chesterfield England. The jug is labeled with the London Batey name.
The jug holds approximately one gallon or 3.78 liters. The top cap would have been a threaded stoneware stopper, (lost along the way) at the base is a spigot port hole, were one would tamp a wooden spigot in place. Above the spigot porthole reads (6D Deposit Charged & Returned) 6D means 6 pennies’, you would have needed to give a 6-penny deposit on the jug.
History,
In the late 1800s, fresh beer was carried from the local pub to home by a small, galvanized bucket. Rumor has it, the term “growler” comes from the sounds the beer made sloshing around in the bucket causing a rumbling sound as the CO2 gas escaped through the lid.
William Batey established his ginger beer factory around 1853. Batey was bankrupt in 1881, and the business was acquired by Richard Alabaster. Batey & Co continued as an independent company until sold in 1952.
Circa, 1930s.
Measures, 13” tall, 7” diameter.
Condition, only one tiny glazing flake on top as show in picture.
