We have for sale an Antique 1880 Mason’s Half Gallon Fruit Jar.
Wonderful find this light blue fruit jar from the 1880s. This is a special jar

Quick history about the Mason’s 1858 jars. John Landis Mason was granted a U.S. patent in 1858 for his screw-neck bottles. By the 1880s Mason’s patent had been stolen and copied by several companies, only a hand full of reputable manufactures paid Mason royalties on his patent. One of these companies was the BALL Brothers Glass Manufacturing Company who manufactured and improved the design. This is also why Ball jars have the Mason name on them.

This jar was an early production jar, it is a two piece jar the treaded mouth was attached to the lower body when the glass was still molten, the rim is known as a ground edge rim which also helps date the jar, this jar’s rim was not ground very level. The jar is known as a drop shoulder jar. The jar is clearly marked with the BALL name at the top with an underscore followed by the Mason’s 1858. Ball started making these around 1879-1880. The base is marked 12S. The lid is made by Ball and not the original, but it is an old one. This jar has wonderful air bubble and ripple lines throughout the jar and raised lettering.

Measures, 9 ½” tall x 4 3/8” diameter at base.

Condition, Very good with no cracks, light scratches on outside and base, couple flea bite chips on rim, light haze on inside.
