Thank you for viewing our Store,

We have for sale an antique Arcade Crystal No. 3 Wall Mount Coffee Grinder
This stunningly beautiful antique Arcade Crystal coffee bean grinder was made by the Arcade Manufacturing Co. of Freeport, ILL. Arcade produced these glass canisters coffee bean grinders from the 1910s until the Great Depression hit in 1929. These came in several colors black, gold, green, red, and off white some were detailed with gold paint highlights. These grinders came with two style canisters the oldest was a fixed canisters that was clamped in place with a leather gasket and the new was a threaded canister that could be unscrewed, this is a fixed canister. The grinder is fully adjustable so you can get the perfect grind for that perfect cup of coffee.

This grinder is approximately 110 years old and has a few special features we need to point out.

First, is the beautiful red paint with gold detail trim (I believe it has been professionally restored but it may be original), if it was restored, they did a magnificent job.

Second, is the glass canister and catch cup. The glass has air bubble typical for this era and a light amethyst purple tint which is due to being exposed to sunlight, the glass has manganese dioxide in it and turns purple when exposed to long periods of sunlight.

Third, is the catch cup it is not the original, the original as most was broken and replace. But some good news it is a highly collectible 9 oz tumbler made by the Cambridge Glass Company of Cambridge, Ohio, it is a model #185 with a horseshoe pattern at the base, made in 1906.

Arcade History,
Founded in 1885, Arcade Manufacturing Co. made cast iron Toys and Small Machinery for home use, especially coffee grinders. They made coffee grinders until the 1930s. In 1946, Arcade was purchased by Rockwell Manufacturing Co.

Purple Glass History,
Old glassware made at the turn of the century 1880-1920 contained manganese dioxide (popularly called glass makers soap) used as a decolorizer. Iron oxide impurities in the silicon glass raw material often resulted in glass that was greenish rather than the desired ‘water clear’. With the addition of manganese dioxide very clear glass was achievable even with impure starting materials. Ironically, colorless glass that contains iron impurities and manganese dioxide will photochemically turn different shades of purple when exposed to the rays of the sun or to other ultra-violet sources.
