Thank you for viewing our Store,
We have for sale an Antique Brass Hand Bell or Cow Bell
Wonderful old brass bell designed after a bell from a Swedish foundry. These were mass produced between 1900 and 1940 pre-WWII and sold by Sears and Roebuck Company. This bell is in very good condition and made of solid cast brass with steel hanger and clapper.
Word of caution, there are reproductions of this bell usually made of low-grade thin brass, a real Chiantel bell at this size weighs 2 pounds.
History:
Saignelegier is a town in Switzerland, Chiantel is the name of the company which produced the bell. Fondeur means foundry (It is a French word). Guessing the 1878 is the date the foundry was created. They were reproduced in the United States by Bevin Bros. Mfg. Co. until the 1960s. The original bells are heavier than the reproductions and the bas relief is deeper. Bevin Bros. brass bells have a steel clapper hung on a wire. You can still find cheap reproductions made today of these bells.
Circa, 1900-1940
Marked, 1878 Saignelegier, Chiantel Fondeur
Measures, 4 ½” tall, 5” diameter at mouth of bell.
Condition, very nice condition no chips or cracks, with good sound. Needs cleaned.
Please see all pictures as they are part of the description.
