Thank you for viewing our Store,
We have for sale a George Fowler #40 Canning Bottle
This is a rare and wonderful find; this jar has traveled far to land in the small village of Black Hawk South Dakota. This jar is known as a George Fowler vacuum cover bottle, manufactured in Reading England, which is west of London. The bottle was made at the turn of the 20th century between 1900-1910 it is a heavy glass bottle with the name Fowler Lee & Co. Ltd Reading 40 in raised lettering on the bottom.
The bottle is a blue / green color with air bubbles and waves in the glass (normal for this time period).
History,
George Fowler was a soldier who served in the British Royal Army Medical Corps and Regular Army, he was also the inventor of field cooking stoves used in a number of theatres of war
He was a key figure in the British bottling industry in the very late 1800's and early 1900's registering new patents for a food bottling and preserving system.
George Fowler gave the patents of his bottling business to his nephew, Joseph Fowler who subsequently came out to Australia in 1912 to found what eventually became the iconic Fowler's Vacola preserving and bottling business. It still operates in Melbourne today.
This is a web page about George Fowler.
